One Year in the Life

Emily Davis, trendingly.com

Emily Davis, trendingly.com

Almost exactly a year ago – mid August 2015 – I came home from my doctor’s office and changed my life. My quarterly blood work, where we monitor my thyroid dosage, was high, high, high. I had again told him, looking him right in the eye, that my husband and I were trying to eat in a more healthy fashion and I was trying to exercise. Bah, humbug. Lies!

I MEANT well, but I was lying to him and myself, and not fooling either of us. Whenever I tried to do better, my husband would sabotage me, trying to protect me from another disappointment, in a long line of them.

This time was different. I decided that day I was either going to actually seriously change my lifestyle or I was going to quit lying about it. I was disgusted with myself, didn’t feel well, and wanted to change.  I decided to try low carb. I had had a little bit of success with this in the past and talked to my son on chat (since he’s in Thailand) about it. True to form, he was super supportive. He suggested that I try to eat 40 grams of carbs per day, staying at 1200 or fewer calories. I found MyFitnessPal.com, a wonderful site where you can list your goals, record what you’re eating (and change it if you find you’re going over either the carbs or calories), plus track your exercise. You can do this in solo fashion or interact with others on the website. (Yesterday I checked in for day # 365).

I found Dana Carpender’s wonderful low carb recipe books. This is the first set of recipe books that uses mostly ingredients you can easily find, giving you simple, GOOD tasting recipes that even my husband likes. I bought one book for slow cooker recipes and another for 15 minute prep or less. I love both of them.

I dug out my ‘Woman’s Walk’ DVD by Leslie Sansone that I got when I was doing NutriSystem years ago. I also found 3 lb weights in the closet, and printed off some really basic lower and upper body strength exercises to do with them. I also wiped down the elliptical trainer in the garage, and found an MP3 player with earphones to use with it.

One year later I have lost 45 lbs and 22 inches.  Slow and steady is the name of the game, as far as I’m concerned. As long as I keep on keepin’ on, my weight is going lower (even though I get in 3 lb loops, where I gain and lose the same three over and over).  I developed a bit of a digestion problem, due to my lack of gallbladder and a difficulty in fully processing fat) a couple of months ago. I talked to my doctor about it this week and he gave me some sample pills that he thinks will solve my problem. :0)

  • I feel better, with more energy than I’ve felt in years
  • When I am good about exercising regularly, I have much less pain in my hips and knees!
  • My blood test numbers are in the NORMAL range in all categories for the first time I can remember. (Isn’t “normal” a beautiful word?)
  • I’m down 3 sizes in jeans so far.
  • I’m receiving compliments and support from people I see regularly, plus amazement from people I only see occasionally.
  • Even my husband is supportive of my efforts this time. He knows I’m serious, and he’s actually told me that he admires me for my persistence.

I’m hopeful that as I begin another year, I can reach my goal of my weight being in the normal range for my height, healthy BMI number, even better blood tests, and getting more fit. I’m hoping that my joint pain will continue to lessen, my blood pressure will get into the normal range and I can stop the medicine I now take, and that I can plan to take long, wonderful walks with my husband without looking for someplace to sit down!

My mantra is

I hope that you’re doing good things for yourself, as well.

6 Hummingbird Morning!

We’re having a slow start to our day since I’m feeling a bit under the weather.

We went in the dining area to take our pills a few minutes ago to find SIX hummingbirds dancing around the feeder! We didn’t catch a picture, but the one above gives you an idea of the delightful sight.

This season was a slow starter for the sweet hummingbirds. I don’t think they liked our cooler, MUCH wetter spring this year. We usually have three or four feeders hung up around the deck, but have only one this year. We’ve had up to 4 hummingbirds at a time for several weeks now, but haven’t seen this many. :0)

We sat at the table, motionless, trying to agree on how many we were seeing.

Something to raise your spirits for sure!!!

A Reminder I Needed

Charter for Compassion via Cathy Ruggiero

Charter for Compassion via Cathy Ruggiero

This is a reminder I needed. I realize I’m getting older, and I fight the urge for comfort, particularly when it comes to trying to learn new things – but it’s HARD.

Last night was a case in point. My husband ordered a remote that was supposed to be an omniscient being that would take the place of our having to juggle remotes constantly.  (Besides having to decide WHICH remote is appropriate for what we’re trying to do, we find ourselves trying to control the TV with our calculators or our phones….)

The idea was a nice one, but the jury is still out on whether I can deal with a remote that is smarter than I am.

First, we found that it really can’t control everything we would like it to.

  • Since Dish and CBS are feuding, we got an antenna so that we can at least keep up with the programs we like – IF we can figure out when they are and actually BE there to watch, rather than being able to automatically tape them and watch them when we have the time. The new remote WILL control the antenna.
  • The remote WILL control the Dish satellite stuff, and we can access what we’ve taped.
  • The remote WILL control the amplifier we use for the volume of whatever we’re watching – we just need to remember to turn OFF whatever volume we were listening to and switch to the other one, if necessary, or else we have TWO different sounds from two different programs playing at the same time.
  • The new remote WILL allow us to mute the sound if we get a phone call, or freeze the program we were watching.

The new remote WILL NOT deal with the Wii Fit Plus. We would need to buy an adaptor, and it just isn’t worth it. I’ll just get up (which I was going to do anyway), turn on the Wii, and get ready to listen to the insults.

The new remote WILL NOT control our Playstation3 (that we use as a DVD player) since it is radio controlled, not LED controlled.

___________

I got really upset trying to work with it. As my husband lost patience with me, I reacted to HIM, rather than being able to even TRY to think about what I was doing wrong on the remote. We ended up going bowling with our friends, and then doing a second lesson.  I did better this time, and my husband regretted making my previous lesson so stressful.

All this shows that I’m really getting averse to not knowing how to control something, resisting change, being intimidated by things I don’t understand, rather than calmly trying to figure them out.

This reminder, which I will print and post beside my computer, will remind me that I NEED to keep an open, curious mind; NOT be intimidated when I don’t catch on right away, and –  most of all – keep an attitude that I CAN master things if I keep on working at them.

Popeye is Up

popeye-front

This is the front of the Popeye mailbox decoration. He’s about 2-1/2 feet tall. He doesn’t show up well until you get pretty close to him.

popeye-back2

This is the back of the piece. You can see the stiffeners from his chest to along his arm under the can of spinach, and the one up the middle strengthening his neck and head.

We have such fun making and displaying these. We have no clue what our neighbors think. Occasionally someone will be laughing as they come up the driveway – a wonderful compliment. :0)

Glorious Rain!

It looks like fall in my yard, it’s so full of leaves fallen from trees that have finally given up. They’ve been so parched they’re shedding their leaves to try to live through the intense heat we’ve been having this summer.

The past two days we’ve enjoyed some glorious rain. The first day we danced in it, laughing while we burned the backlog of trash in the shop. Today we got caught in it while we were grocery shopping. We were drenched, and never stopped smiling.

We had lots of thunder this afternoon. I sat in my recliner with a cup of coffee and my current book. Later I woke up, refreshed from a wonderful nap.

I can almost hear all the plant life outside saying, “AHHHHHHH!”

A Tree Smiles

The Literacy Site via Cathy Ruggiero

The Literacy Site via Cathy Ruggiero

I’m enjoying a website called “Bookbub.com” lately. My sister-in-law, MaryLou, told me about it. I’m regularly buying and downloading new books onto my Kindle Fire. I love being able to try a book without spending a fortune.

I will never convert to ONLY reading the Kindle Fire, though – even if they make it so it cooks dinner for you and cleans your house, as well as being a great source for reading.  There is nothing like holding a book in your hands while you read. If it’s a book from which I want to learn, I read with a yellow highlighter in hand, ready to mark things I don’t want to forget.  Many times I’ll download a book, decide I love it and want to make it a permanent part of my collection, and go to Amazon to buy the REAL book.

I guess it’s a function of my age that I don’t really trust the cloud to keep my stuff available and safe. I try to stay prepared that if something happens and I lose all the books I have on my Kindle Fire, it won’t be something for which I’ll slit my throat. It will be irritating, for sure, but not like losing a REAL one…

Dogs

Anita Opper - Zen to Zany via Cathy Ruggiero

Anita Opper – Zen to Zany via Cathy Ruggiero

I can’t imagine life without a dog or cat or fish, or several of all three.

Losing a pet is one of the very hardest things there is. You find yourself sobbing, guts hanging out for all to see. Fewer things in life hurt more.

Some people decide, after losing a beloved pet, that they just won’t get another. They don’t want to open themselves up to that kind of hurt again.  You give to a pet unlimited love. You talk to them about everything because they’re so understanding and compassionate. You become co-dependent, feeling lost and alone when one of you isn’t there.

My husband and I have been lucky enough to have several pets over the years. Each time we lose one we’re devastated – inconsolable.  For us, though, the only thing that helps us is to go right out and find another.

Even though we aren’t sure we really want to, if we’re lucky enough to find another sweet animal to come live with us, we’re FORCED to reach out to meet the sweet little thing’s needs. We CANNOT withdraw into ourselves. We must feed it. We must take it outside. We must make a home for it, with bed, water and food bowls, a collar, tags, shots, spaying or neutering – the whole 9 yards.

In the process of doing this, we have found that, although we don’t miss the beloved pet any less, the new wriggling furry bundle of joy has helped our hearts heal a bit. Our new addition has forced us to go on, reacting to each other as well as the fuzzy little animal, filling a void with someone who needs us.

Yes, “Dogs are Miracles with Paws.” Anita Opper has said it perfectly. I love the bright little eyes on this guy, running to us, hoping he’ll be accepted…

Refurbished Brown Tee – Take 3

I had fun painting a brown tee with white puffy ‘flowers.’  Then I looked at the shirt and decided it didn’t look ‘finished,’ so I put more white flowers on it. On looking at it again, I decided I thought a powder blue would add something. So I did that yesterday.

Here is the finished refurbished tee –

At least I know that no one else on the planet has a shirt like this….

Playing in My Art Room – Friday

Recently I’ve been refurbishing favorite tees by painting them, making button designs on them, or both. I sponge painted white puffball flowers on a brown tee and decided I wasn’t happy with the design and added to it. Today I’ve decided that I want to add some powder blue ‘tops’ to the flowers. Even if the tee ends up in the trash, I’ve had some fun afternoons. I’ll post another pic of it if I decide to keep it. :0)

Frustrated

ZentoZanyviaCathyRuggiero5

Zen to Zany via Cathy Ruggiero

Two dear friends of mine are in rough patches, and all I can do is listen – trying to let them know I care.

One has problems at work. Co-workers are undermining themselves and each other, causing problems for the whole office. My friend isn’t in a position to do anything definitive and has to not only continue to work with these people, but also try to get them to work together, try to keep them from fighting when possible customers enter the office, and try to keep from pulling her hair out. Bad situation, and I can’t think of any reasonable thing to even suggest. :0)

Another friend has family problems. She is normally a really funny, devil-may-care, enthusiastic person, but family problems have made her quiet and sad. I’ve reminded her that I’m here, that I can listen, and that I care about her, but I’m frustrated that I can’t wave a magic wand and ‘fix’ things. I hate to see her hurting.

I’ll keep thinking about things. I’ll hope to hear from them, and reach out again if I don’t. I know that they would both help me if I had a problem. I’m lucky to have both of these ladies as good friends. I hope I can figure out something I can do…

The Price of Indulgence

Markulatura-via emily davis, trendingly.com

Markulatura-via emily davis, trendingly.com

My husband fixed us a tall root beer float night before last. It was delicious, and we haven’t had one in over a year. The end result, however, was that I gained 3 lbs. :0(

Progress to date on trying to get the lard off –

Down 44 lbs

Down 22 inches

I could beat myself up over gaining the poundage or realize that a new lifestyle includes some indulges and enjoy it. I’ve decided to do the latter.

I got a blood test today in preparation for my quarterly doctor appointment, so that will tell the tale on how I’m doing.

Yesterday’s exercise was jumping up and down watching the women’s gymnastics. Wow! I’m proud to share the same PLANET as these talented women! I was particularly happy for their long-time coach, who is retiring. The women, when they found they had won, said, “We’re the Final Five.” I had tears in my eyes and I was only watching!

So – I’ve promised myself that I’m back on my low carb eating plan after the root beer float indulgence – I didn’t get anything when my husband stopped at the Sonic for a small banana milkshake after we took the horseshoe tree to Michael – and we’re having a large salad and one of our dwindling supply of truly wonderful tomatoes for dinner this evening. And I’m definitely walking with Annoying Leslie tomorrow!

Maybe I’ll have fewer promises and more actual accomplishment NEXT week.

Request Delivered

I got the extra package of horseshoes from Michael when he cut my hair this afternoon.

I brought them home and my husband and I got busy, trying to finish the project.

This picture gives you the best idea of what we did. The difference is that our tree is larger, having 5 horseshoes across the bottom of the tree, instead of the 4 you see here. We also put a straight piece on top of the top horseshoe so that Michael could put a star ornament on the top.

We took it right to him when we finished. I didn’t even get to take a picture of it with my phone!

The look on Michael’s face when we brought it into his shop was a joy for us. He really seemed pleased with the finished product. He’s such a nice person and takes such good care of both of us, it felt good to be able to give him a small ‘thank you.’

I wish we could take credit for the design. We found a number of clever ideas on the net. There are a lot of creative people out there!

The Greenhouse Project

taylorsgreenhouse

To my delight – and – I have to admit – ENVY – our friends, the Taylors are building a two-story greenhouse on the back of their house!  They are doing the building themselves, making all the supports, doing all the backbreaking and exacting work as they can manage the time and materials.

Here you can see the beautiful supports for the greenhouse and how the whole thing will mesh with the rest of the house.

taylorsgreenhouse2

Here’s another view of the supports.

greenhouse3

Polycarbonate sheets go up over the supports. Here they have installed three of the 5 runs of sheeting.

greenhouse4

Here all the polycarbonate sheets are up!

I have no clue what comes next. I’m so excited for my friend. She’ll have a blast working here, growing all kinds of exciting things!

Feeling Stupid

Michael, the wonderful man who cuts our hair, asked us if we could help him make a horseshoe tree. We, of course, said, “Sure!”

horseshoetree

He sent us a text with a picture showing the tree he wanted us to make. We got the horseshoes from him today when we went in for my husband’s haircut.

For some reason, even though the picture was on my phone, we were unable to get it off the phone onto the computer so we could print one large enough to see the details. I went on the net and found a picture and printed it. (above)

We came home and got to work. The horseshoes didn’t fit as well as we would like, so we modified some of them to emulate the picture as much as possible. We got most of the tree welded together, noticing we were 3 horseshoes short. We got the tree made, but only had one horseshoe of the 4 needed for the base.

When I got on my phone to text Michael, I saw the pic he sent again. It was this one –

tree2

Gulp. We were short because we made the wrong one. :0(

Michael was really nice, saying he’ll have the extra group of horseshoes at the salon when I go for MY haircut tomorrow.

My husband is embarrassed because he couldn’t get the pic off my phone. I’M embarrassed because I didn’t pay enough attention to detail. It’s a really good thing Michael is understanding.

Hopefully, we can finish the tree tomorrow and take it to him at work this week.

With friends like us….
