Getting the Lard Off Progress Report – 7/20/2016

Lacey3448411 via Emily Davis, trendingly.com

Lacey3448411 via Emily Davis, trendingly.com

It has been almost exactly 11 months since I changed my lifestyle to eating low carb and trying to move more. I’ve been trying to eat 40 grams or less of carbs and 1200 calories or less per day.  It’s easier to stay under the calories goal than the carbs.  Today I’m down 43 lbs and 21 inches.

One of the biggest motivators these days is friends. Monday night we went bowling with 3 long time friends. We see each other most weeks, but both of the women have been very kind to make comments such as, “Linnnnn-daaaaa, you’re getting skinny!” I’m far from skinny.  According to BMI charts and weight charts, a healthy BMI is between 18.5 and 24.9, and a healthy weight is between 124 and 138 for my height. I’ve been trying to get taller for years. Since that doesn’t seem to be happening, I’ll shoot for losing another 30 lbs.

The most important differences I’ve enjoyed are

  • my blood test numbers are NORMAL for the first time that I can remember. My doc said I didn’t need to take cholesterol meds anymore! My blood pressure, which was barely controlled with one-and-a-half pills, to 140+/90, is now 120/70 with one pill.
  • My hair dresser remarked that my hair was thicker and my skin clearer!
  • I have a lot more energy. In fact, I have to remind myself how old I am in order not to completely overdo and pay for it the following day. (For example, my usual limit on yard work was about half an hour a day. Yesterday I worked a total of 3 hours in three sessions using the pressure washer. I’m planning to take things a bit easier today.)
  • I have noticeably less pain in my hips and knees.

I have to admit that being able to come down three sizes in jeans so far is satisfying. I’m able to wear some tops that have been too small and had just taken up space in my closet for quite awhile, too. I have a couple of nice coats that I’m HOPING I’ll be able to wear again this coming winter…

My main goal is to

Greenhouse Envy

taylorsgreenhouse

Our good friends are in the middle of a huge project to build a two-story greenhouse on the back of their house!  This will have to move slowly – both for the size of the project and the horribly hot weather we’re having now, but it’s happening!  This picture shows you the beautiful arches they’re attaching to the concrete. Attachment rods were sunk into the concrete to make this really secure. I don’t know all the details of what they’re doing, but I’m green with envy. I really don’t know of anyone who deserves a beautiful greenhouse more than my friend.

taylorsgreenhouse2

Here you can see more of the back of their house and how the greenhouse will fit in. I’ll try to get more pics as the project moves on. I’m so excited for them!

Lewis Metal Critters – Take 3

after_dogwithbone2

Dog with Bone

We had fun making this piece particularly because he is in three pieces: body and legs, head, and tail. He lives close to our propane tank. We can move the head so that he’s looking at people, and his tail can be moved so it looks perky. Our pit bull’s reaction to him when we first put him out was to walk over, sniff him, and then calmly pee on him. Not our best compliment….

bestPaintedGunDog3

This is our guard dog. He is attached to a huge boulder to one side of the upper part of our driveway.  He is made completely with cut out sheet metal. We used some pipe as part of the rifle, ball bearings for his fingers and toes, and wire for his whiskers.  We attached a “Beware of the Dog” sign.

blkfraidycat1

This is a black kitty cat. The head and feet are sheet metal. We used welding rods for his whiskers, ball bearings on his feet, and cat’s eye marbles for his eyes. He is powder-coated, so he won’t have any problem being out in the weather.

Whew!

My husband and I just spent about 45 minutes cleaning up at the bottom of our driveway. In probably the hottest part of the day. (97 degrees F at 55% humidity=114 degrees F (give or take)).  We lopped off branches that were encroaching on the driveway, weed whacked, and then sprayed with weed killer.

I had to compliment my husband once again for good planning when we built the house. We ran an electrical line down the driveway and put in an electrical box toward the bottom. This allows us to take a long electrical cord and hook up tools like the weed whacker, chain saw, etc. Without power down there, we’d be forced to use only gas-powered or battery-powered tools, or run 6 or 7 100 foot lines together to make it down to the bottom.

We’re HOPING that this effort will make the bottom of our driveway look as if someone actually lives here and cares what the place looks like!

Meanwhile, we each have a cold bottle of water to glug and we’ll do some serious resting. AHHHHHH!

The Pressure is On!

pressurewashingpropanetank

I’ve decided that our pressure washer is addictive. I am absolutely amazed at how well it works, and how much more you notice when there’s a chance to do something about it.

preswashingpropanetank2

We worked more on the driveway pad yesterday (a several-day project) and then tackled the 1000 gallon propane tank yesterday afternoon. We were chased off before we were really finished by storm clouds, but it already looks MUCH better than it did.

propanetank.2jpg

I had used several different kinds of cleaners, along with a big long car brush we have, as well as a good scrub brush I have, but couldn’t even phase the grime. This is a sticky type of stuff. We sprayed the tank with soap, let it work for about 5 minutes, and then started with the water. Truly amazing.

This afternoon and evening I’m going to continue on the driveway pad and see if I can get that finished.

WARNING!  Pressure washers are highly addictive!

Pump Bug Sprayer

We just got a Ryobi pump sprayer. It’s battery-powered, and you just turn it on and hold down the sprayer control to spread whatever you want in a stream or wide spray, or anything in-between.

We got ours because we have a 650+ foot steep, wooded driveway with tent caterpillars this year.

en.wikipedia.org

en.wikipedia.org

There is no way you can reach them, even standing in the bed of our truck, to remove them. The best we can do is hose down each caterpillar tent the spray will reach.

We just finished filling the container with bug spray and water and attaching the battery. This battery driven pump spray goes much higher and coats things much more effectively than you can do any other way.

I drove the truck slowly down one side and back up on the other finding another tent and stopping while my husband stood in the back of the truck and hosed it down with the bug spray. Even though he had to tighten some connections and adjust the spray head a couple of times, it worked as well as we could have asked. We had one WAAAAAAY up high in a tree we couldn’t reach with the stream of bug killer, but we got the rest of it done pretty well, we think.

We’ll also be able to spray liquid fertilizer, fungicide and other things.

Aren’t we lucky that technology comes to our aid just when we need it!

Clean Molly

CleanMolly

Sweet Molly is a Schnauzer/Cocker Spaniel cross we bought several years ago. I wanted a “lap dog,” and our pit bull, Bambi, was too big for that even when he was a puppy. Molly was going to be my sweet, lady-like, cuddly lap dog. She had a bubbly personality that offset our serious pit bull nicely. She acted a fool and made him laugh. She brightened up the whole family.

I got part of what I wanted. She is a good lap dog, though she’s a bit too large and heavy. We spend a good amount of time cuddling in my recliner and she does make all of us laugh. She didn’t get the memo about ‘sweet’ and ‘lady-like,’ though.

Her hunting skills put Bambi to shame. She runs all over the yard nose to the ground in patterns only she can appreciate. She sticks her nose into holes or anywhere she smells something interesting. She loves to pretend she’s super-brave – barking like a fiend when she thinks she’s on the trail. We can readily tell if she’s found something above her pay grade, though. Her bark changes to a high-pitched, ‘somebody help me’ bark. We all run to her aid, including Bambi, who then dispatches possums or other weird critters Molly has uncovered.

Lately Molly has come in covered from nose to tail with burrs. They’re little bitty and stick badly to her hair. The last few days she’s come in with a totally black, wet, burr-covered muzzle, similarly covered feet, and burrs all over. It has taken me about half an hour with a comb to get all the burrs out. She is not a happy camper.

We took her to be groomed this morning. I asked the groomer to ‘sheer her like a sheep’ short all over. The groomer would prefer to leave wonderful, cute ‘eyebrows,’ longer hair on her ears,  and a mustache, but I have to tell her no. SHE is not the one who has to bathe the dog at least every other day, or get the burrs out while Molly acts as if I’m torturing her. She is much happier, and much easier to repair when she looks like this. We call her “Sleek Molly,” or “Summer Molly” this time of year.

Under Pressure

Blue Ocean Pressure Washer

Blue Ocean Pressure Washer

We have wanted a pressure washer for several years now. We finally decided to go ahead and get one. After reading a LOT of reviews on the net, we bought this one. It was delivered yesterday. (Did I tell you I love the net and UPS?)

My husband put things together and – always eager to try a new toy, hooked it up to the hose and electricity and started to blast away.

He wanted to blast the dirt he couldn’t sweep up around the edges of the driveway pad. It looks like it’ll do a great job on that.

I wanted to wash the vinyl above the garage door and the top of the garage door. I was amazed at how much better it looked after no more than a minute or two!

I happened to blast a part of our driveway pad and couldn’t believe the difference.

concretebeforeandafter1

I’m a crappy housekeeper, but I never thought I would be grossed out and embarrassed about dirty concrete…. On the left is ‘before.” On the right, ‘after.’

concretebeforeandafter2

I went along the edge where the pad meets the garage. You can easily see where I stopped…

concretebeforeandafter3

I’m going to fire up the pressure washer when we get back from errands. My goal for the day is to get the concrete done – sidewalk and porch in front, sidewalk in back, and the rest of the driveway pad.

We also cleaned our trash cans from all over the house and feel like we have a new lease on life. What a wonderful tool!

Storm Aftermath

stormaftermath

Well, we got the rain we needed, but a whole lot of gusty winds that we didn’t. This is the aftermath in my square foot garden. You can’t even tell there’s a plan here!

stormaftermath2

After taking these pictures, I did the best I could to straighten up the tomato cages and then tied them to the others that are right along the fence.

stormaftermath3

I have no idea if the garden will continue to produce after this or not.

stormaftermath4

Hopefully, in the coming days I’ll see signs that the sweet plants made it. I’m glad we don’t have storms like this often.

Pepe and Penelope – Lewis Mailbox Decoration

pnp-front

Two of our favorite cartoon characters growing up were Pepe LePew and the love of his life, Penelope the cat. Doing this decoration brought back fond memories and lots of smiles.  This is the front of the decoration.  It’s welded to a cross bar that is welded to the bar with holes in it that allows us to attach it to the mailbox with nuts and bolts. The piece is about 2 feet tall and a little less wide.

pnp-back

This is the back of the decoration. You can see where I tried to paint the bar so that it melted into the bottom of the design as much as possible.

Baskets and wooden boxes are my thing. In fact, they’re so MUCH my thing I’ve had to stop going anywhere where either are featured – or at least only when it’s my birthday or something similar.

I can figure out a need for either at the drop of a hat. I would be a wonderful person for basket or box makers to hire to brainstorm about how their products could be used and enjoyed.  My list is unending….

Here are the latest I’ve found and drooled over on the net. :0)
