Permanent Vacation

Zen to Zany via Cathy Ruggiero

Zen to Zany via Cathy Ruggiero

Sometimes I feel so lucky it scares me. My husband reacts the same way – waiting for the other shoe to drop. I have a more optimistic outlook, but really have to stop and say, “WOW!” every once in awhile.

We worked all of our adult lives. Many times this resulted in having to live in two different places, meeting when we could. A lot of time was spent on the phone, trying to hold each other close.  The years passed and finally we were both working from home. I was doing medical transcription and my husband was a computer analyst, working for different companies through a man we knew in Vermont. We thought that was the best that could ever be.  My husband received less work, due to changes in the economy. He finally decided he would retire. I continued to work for a couple more years. Changes were made in the surgery department for which I worked, and I decided to retire, as well.

Since then, our lives continue to change for the better. We’re so busy now we honestly can’t figure out how we ever had time to work! Of course we have our have-to’s, and stuff we would rather not be saddled with, but – for the most part – we design our days around our errands.

Who knew that one of our favorite things would be to create metal yard critters and learn to make metal decorations for our mailbox together? Instead of having ‘heated discussions” about bills, problems, etc., WE have heated discussions when I don’t want to create something I consider in bad taste, or we can’t agree what colors to paint our newest creation. Right now, for example, we’re trying to come to a decision about how to paint our 1000 gallon propane tank…

I’ve spent almost 15 years now running Creative Artworks!  When I started it, I displayed only my own art work. My son and I figured out that I could add the work of other artists at no higher cost to me, other than the time and labor of adding their work and handling the business details. This was life-changing for me. I’ve never enjoyed anything more. I’ve met some really talented people, some who have become real friends, through doing something I love.

About 7 years ago I started a blog. I loved the idea of being able to show people what we offered on Creative Artworks. I also found funny or touching pictures I wanted to share. Artwork outside my website made my mouth water. The world is full of such amazing people. I’m proud to be on the same planet. I changed from Blogspot to WordPress about 6 years ago and have expanded what I’m doing with it. Instead of trying to come up with things to say or show you, I have to remember that I might be aggravating people by writing too much! I hope that people read my stuff when they have the time and the inclination, feeling free to delete it if they’re not in the mood, too busy, etc.

I had a setback lately when I reached the limit on the free part of WordPress. Due to a lack of communication, I discovered that by deleting images as they required, I had killed the links in my posts! The images weren’t retrievable. I’m now paying for unlimited space after having to delete 6 years worth of ‘stuff,’ – starting over.  When I considered just closing the blog down, it was really clear how much I love doing this. I discovered that it is a quality of life thing for me.

I also have a chance to try to grow some of our own food. I absolutely love having built a square foot garden with my husband. For several years now, I’ve been learning more about what NOT to do again, but I’m having a blast. Now we’re converting from the square foot garden to a RAISED BED square foot garden, and I’ll be trying it out for the first time this fall, depending on what plants I can find.

I have an art room that – even though it usually looks as if a bomb has exploded in there – is a haven. I can shut the door and immerse myself in wonderful art supplies and pictures that get my juices going. Right now I’m trying to make the time and energy to try to create some designs with buttons on tee shirts, and cut out a design on a gourd…

I’m one of the luckiest people on the planet. Although we’re fine, my husband would like for me to win the Powerball lottery or the Publishers Clearinghouse drawing. He has many plans to which he adds without limit if suddenly we had all the money in the world…

My health is better than it’s been in a long time. I have my husband, my son, two dogs, two cats, and a whole lot of happiness on my “permanent vacation.”

Raised Bed Gardening Progress

Yesterday my husband and I got so overheated doing our errands that once we cooled off in the house, we both slept for an hour or so in our chairs. When we awoke, the sky was looking darker than was usual for 7pm, so we went out to find that a cool front apparently had swooped in while we were asleep, and the temperature was in the high 80s, rather than over 100!

We took advantage of this and got the third raised bed garden box installed in the garden.

raisedbedvsregular

This picture shows you that the garden is now equally divided between ‘regular’ square foot garden on the right (North) and raised bed square foot garden on the left (South).

raisedbed2

This picture is taken from the West end of the garden, looking East, so you get an idea of the three 4’x4′ wooden raised bed garden boxes on metal supports on the south side of the garden. Each box is filled with Mel’s Mix (vermiculite, peat moss, and three or more kinds of compost. We use mushroom, barnyard, and cotton burr.) The screws you see sticking up on the edges of the box are for string to be stretched across from both directions to create the square foot planting areas. We put 1×2’s across the whole length of the three boxes to support the sprinkler in the center of each box and the hose lengths going from one sprinkler to the next.

raisedbed4

This is a close up of one of the sprinklers. We can adjust these so that all the squares are getting a good amount of water and the whole system is on a timer.

raisedbed5

As you can see, the metal supports didn’t allow for the boxes to be at exactly the same level as the others. We settled for LEVEL at whatever height that was. You can also see here that I need to mix more Mel’s Mix tonight to fill up the third box. I also need to spread wood chips under the three raised bed boxes.

We’re now almost ready to plant the fall garden! I’ll be limited by whatever the locals have for sale, but I’m mainly hoping to be able to plant two or three different kinds of lettuce, spinach, radishes, and whatever else is available, such as broccoli, squash, cauliflower, etc. I’ll watch for our locals to start selling plants and I can jump right in and get things planted for the fall, letting the summer garden go as long as it wants.

garden-northside

This is the north side of the garden now. I’ve propped up the tomato plants as well as possible after they all went down (cages and all) during the last big storm. I have a lot of greenery, but not much in the way of actual harvest-able veggies.  I’m still hoping for cucumbers, a couple of different kinds of squash, some melon, tomatoes, bell peppers, etc. to make.

Tomato Harvest July 24, 2016

tomatoharvest20160724

These are the tomatoes I picked this morning. I should have picked yesterday because several tomatoes had been found and sampled by birds. It is so hot now (heat index of ONLY 130.8 degrees F today) that the plants are drying up in spite of being on the irrigation system and getting lots of water daily. I’m hoping we get more, but am reminding myself not to get TOO greedy…

I’m Getting the Itch

I’ve been distracted lately. My poor brain is going non-stop, during the day and in my dreams at night, thinking about button designs I might create on some solid color tees I have in my art room.

I haven’t gone up to my art room in at least a couple of months due to the huge amount of work I’ve been trying to keep up with outside since spring. My brain is going to push me to spend time now in the afternoons – when you fry like an egg when you step outside – to get started on the fun of diving in and seeing what I can create.

I’ve done a bit of button art in the past, and I’ve learned to have a healthy respect for button artists. Even if you have all the materials needed and he greatest buttons in the world, it does NOT mean you can do anything with them.  One tends to look at this nice artwork and think, “I could do that!” You can, and you should, have a lot of fun doing this, but should NOT expect to be able to create anything like what you see in images. If you try it, I would love to compare images and notes. We can get each other excited about new things to try!

A Heat Index of WHAT?

Our temperature this afternoon is supposed to reach at least 100 degrees. Our humidity is 61%. Just for giggles, I decided to look up the heat index (what it FEELS like) and it said 131 degrees F.   WHAT!

My husband and I have been going out about 8pm and doing what we can in the garden. Last night we got the metal support up for the 3rd raised garden bed box! Tonight we’ll try to put the wooden garden box into the support and fill it with Mel’s Mix. (At least we can put in the mix that I put in the trash cans. With all the asparagus roots I dug out of the garden, I didn’t come up with nearly as much Mel’s Mix to reuse.).  I may have to wait until Sunday evening to mix up enough to fill the new box. When we get it filled, I’ll take pics.  We also need to change the bulb in a yard light on the shop, if we can.

Meanwhile, if you’re in one of the dangerous or extreme heat areas today, please take care of yourself. Heat stroke is no laughing matter.

Falling Plates

fallingplatetarget3

Between our shop and our square foot garden, there is a large pile of slag. We use this from time to time around the yard, but mainly we use it as a backdrop for shooting practice. We have been just putting up paper plates using clothes pins, but my husband saw an idea for a “Falling Plates” target in a magazine and decided to make one for us.

fallingplatetarget2

It’s basically a really heavy square tube of metal on even heavier stands. He has cut out thick ‘plates’ from metal and attached them so they swing freely from the horizontal tube.

fallingplatetarget

If you manage to shoot a plate, the plate falls backward. The goal is to shoot all four plates in under 4 seconds. Hahahahahahaahhaah! I couldn’t do that if my life depended on it, but it’ll be a fun thing to try.

My husband isn’t sure that his design will work as intended. It may be that the plates won’t fall backwards when we shoot them. It may also be that we shoot ONE, and they ALL fall down at the same time. He’s ready to tweak his design if we can find the time and energy after the sun goes down.

Tonight, though, the plan is to get started trying to install the 3rd raised bed garden box. If we can actually do this, I’ll take pics and share them with you.

Right now the heat index is 115 degrees F., so we’re staying inside until we can move around out there without immediately frying.

Pressured to Clean!

My husband thinks I’ve gone off the deep end on using our new pressure washer. He may be right, but it’s really satisfying to be able to clearly see where you’ve been. :0)

Here are some before and after pictures. (I realize I’m showing you clearly what a slob I am, but I think you already knew that.)

Propane tank after.   (I’m thinking of painting this, since the paint is starting to peel. I’m looking for something unique, or at least very colorful).

I finally finished it last night. (My husband then mowed the back yard, spraying it with grass….. :0(  )

I didn’t get a pic of the front porch and pad before.

I’m taking a day off from the pressure washing today, since I’m old and my body is telling me I need to spread this out a bit more. I plan to tackle the back sidewalk next.

“A Tisket, a Tasket….”

“My kingdom for a gasket.”

gasket

geprofile

We bought a GE Profile French door refrigerator about 7 years ago. We have been delighted with it. Awhile back, though, the pull-out freezer at the bottom started acting wonky. I would try to open it and it would be frozen up, with ice everywhere. Since it’s supposed to be frostless, we knew we had a problem. I thought maybe I just hadn’t gotten it closed well, but after several tests, we decided that the gasket to the freezer had become brittle and wasn’t sealing correctly.

We found a man who would order the gasket for us and come to install it. He called this morning and will be here this afternoon! Once this is done, we’re waiting on a shelf support from which a small part broke off in one of our deicing attempts. Soon, we’ll be fully back in  business. The best part is that the lady I talked to this morning said he could replace the gasket without my having to empty the freezer! Even if she’s wrong, I’m delighted that help is on the way….
